The Essay

Tertiary educational institutes ought to enroll the same number of students of both genders in all areas of study. I do not agree with this statement since the choice of subjects must be that of students.

First, in all subjects, universities would not be able to obtain equal number of boys and girls. Universities are already open to all applicants irrespective of gender. Besides, even if universities reject application of male students into a particular stream of their choice such as nursing or home science, and offer another subject for which they have no interest, they are less likely to do good in it.

Second, it is the natural inclination of male and female students to opt for some streams. It is observed that majority of girls prefer psychology, nursing, computer sciences or electronics as opposed to mechanical in the tertiary level of study. Thus computer sciences and electronics class rooms have equal proportion of both genders or even larger enrollments of girl students. For instance, in Delhi University eighty percent of students were girls in 2019, in the post graduation psychology classes.

On the other hand, few contend that there should be no gender based discrimination in the process of admission in universities in any subject. They believe that similar number of girls and boys would ensure equality in society as well as promote a healthy competition between them. Additionally, they argue that both genders would be able to explore their full potential.

In conclusion, according to me, universities should not admit same volume of students in every subject, since selection of course is an individual preference and should not be imposed by educationists.
