Essay Topic: Some people believe that unpaid community service should be a compulsory part of high school programmes (for example working for a charity, improving the neighborhood or teaching sports to younger children).
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
The Essay: Adding volunteering work for the community should be a mandatory element in school curriculum, is what few people opine I totally agree that these services should be part of academic syllabus, as it would definitely help students to not only build soft skills but also critical moral values.
Firstly, incorporating value based projects as obligatory part of education in schools will impart ample values to children, such as, empathy, teamwork, leadership and creativity. Moreover, it is advantageous to society in so many ways and children grow up to be responsible citizens. For instance, there is a club of students in Pondicherry, who clean up the beach every weekend as a part of the Swatchh Bharat campaign started under the leadership of Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India.
Secondly, with each charity program that students take up teaches them the hardships faced by the less fortunate people of society. Additionally, they realise at a young age, that not everything in this world can be bought solely with wealth but can be obtained through sharing and caring. Furthermore, young ones appreciate the truth that true joy is in giving.
Nevertheless, few contend that forceful involvement of pupils in charitable jobs can be taxing on them and would be a burden with the amount of subjects they have to study. Moreover, school time ought to be strictly for strengthening the foundation of knowledge.
To conclude, I believe, contributing to society through free social or communal activities should not be an elective subject in schools, so that essential values can be fostered in children and they grow up to be better individuals in the society.
