The Essay Question: All over the world, societies are facing a growing problem with obesity. This problem affects both children and adults. What are the reasons for this rise in obesity?

How can it be tackled?

The Essay: Societies, across nations are confronting the challenging proliferation of  excessive weight amongst little ones and adults alike. I believe, the major reasons are poor diet and lack of exercise, however, this could be overcome by judicious management of food intake and regular physical activity.

Firstly, following a sedentary lifestyle along with poor eating habits lead to being overweight, which in turn adversely affects health. More importantly, the trend of eating junk food that was seen among youth, has now spread over to the older generations as well. For example, the number of fast food outlets like McDonalds or Pizza Hut, apart from food delivery companies, have doubled in the past few years globally.

Secondly, lack of any physical work or exercise of any sorts, has only made the situation worse. Many people travel far for work and come back late and thus find minimal time for exercise. Moreover, most people order a plethora of food items over mobile applications, such as, Swiggy and Zomato, that deliver the same at their doorstep, which has only created couch- potatoes and more fat people.

Nevertheless, to counter this challenge of worldwide obesity in children and adults, there should be educational camps that foster these habits of eating right since childhood. They should be enlightened about the consequences of eating junk food. Besides this, governments, educational institutions and corporates should enforce an active lifestyle in people by introducing sports and exercise into their lives. For instance, the Prime minister of India, Narendra Modi, recently introduced the Fit India campaign to encourage people to remain healthy and fit.

To conclude, in my opinion, unhealthy food habits and lack of physical work has induced obesity in people of every age, around the globe. However, this can be combatted by creating awareness at a young age and with government initiatives to encourage people to exert for well-being.
