Essay Question:
Without capital punishment our lives are less secure and crimes of violence increase. Capital punishment is essential to control violence in society. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion
Answer:
In the absence of death penalty, our life is not much safe and crime will accelerate. I completely agree with this statement that capital punishment is important to save society and curb the number of bloody incidents occurring.
Firstly, capital punishment is indispensable to ensure the well-being of a society. When criminals are not given the death sentence, justice is not done to the victim and their family. Additionally, this might lead to counter acts of violence with revenge. In the event of people being murdered for money, lust or greed, society is badly impacted and the death penalty alone can salvage the situation. Besides, this alone can minimise violence so that people live peacefully.
Secondly, the death penalty is the only way to punish the criminals who have done heinous crimes. Moreover, it will deter other similar acts in future, since criminally oriented people will be scared of the outcome. According to a recent study published in the leading television news channel, the rate of offences has dipped in Italy, post implementation of death penalty.
However, proponents of the view that capital punishment will neither improve the safety of a society nor limit felony, argue that those who want to commit crimes will continue. They contend that such psychologically deranged people, take to violent acts irrespective of the punishment and hence, prolonged counselling and behavioural changes in captivity, will be more effective.
To conclude, according to me, capital punishment is the best method to make our society a better place to live in and can control many violent crimes in society, although others believe that it would not make a difference.
