The Essay:
It is observed that marriages are becoming more lavish and costly. I believe this is owing primarily to a tendency to exhibit wealth and growth in incomes which is not a healthy shift.
Wedding events have become a symbol of social status, unlike in the past when weddings were not so costly. There is a growing pressure amongst families to show off their wealth and compete with each other in nuptial organisations. Each wedding motivates future couples to outbeat the others in extravagant arrangements.
Moreover, higher earnings among people, especially when both bride and groom earn, creates a desire in them to make their big day more memorable by indulging in the best products, be it garments, food, gifts or even entertainment. Besides, with technology, superior and innovative methods of making the event grandiose is effortless.
Nevertheless, the recent upswing in the investment in weddings gives rise to a financial burden on some families to emulate the others. Many parents have to take loan in order to satisfy the demands of their children during marriage.
Additionally, the large amount of money spent in a wedding could be saved by the couple for their future needs. The money expended in just a few days, could also be given to the needy.
On the other hand, ostentatious weddings give rise to a myriad business opportunities and employment for many others. Event managers, food caterers, dress designers, electricians, florists and so on, are some trades which gain from big sized weddings.
To conclude, according to me, the trend of marriages gaining in size and expenditure, is due to the surge in personal wealth and a propensity to display riches. Nonetheless, this is a negative development considering the many useful ways in which the same money could be utilised for.
