Essay Topic: Some people say that sport is very important for a nation’s development, while others believe that sport is no more than a leisure time activity. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

The Essay A:

There has been much debate on the significance of sports with few saying it is crucial for the progress of a country and yet others believing that it is merely an activity for free time.

Firstly, the contribution of sports to the growth of a nation is undisputed. The various international and national sporting events bring in foreign currency, business and employment to a cross section of society. Apart from this, several foreigners come to view the mega sports events which also promotes tourism. For example, the Asiad games competitions in India in 2012, witnessed a large inflow of tourists from other nations.

Secondly, the prominent sports like cricket and football, involves the governments as well and huge amount of finance is involved in such sports by way of prizes, contracts, players fees, telecast rights and advertising money. Moreover, in case a country wins, it brings name and fame not only to the players but also to the country. In addition, sports are a source of livelihood to several people and thus contributing to a country’s growth.

On the other hand, at the micro level, sports is certainly a free time engagement for many people who are not involved in it seriously or professionally. They spend some time on sports like hockey, badminton or others, during leisure hours for relaxation and entertainment. Furthermore, for many, sports is also a tool for keeping fit and bonding with others.

In conclusion, according to me, sports definitely promotes the development of a country by bringing in money in several ways when played competitively nationally and internationally. Nevertheless, it is also a past time activity for the masses who are not so deeply involved in it but consider it just fun or as a way of destressing.

Essay B:

Sports has gained in popularity in today’s world. However, it is a moot point amongst people whether sports contribute to a nation’s growth or they are merely free time activities.

Firstly, it is an undeniable fact that sports are imperative for any country. Playing any kind of sport makes people healthier, builds character, teaches leadership and contributes significantly for the development of mentally stable generations. A strong and healthy population alone can help in the progress of any country.  Secondly, many international events such as Olympics, fosters universal fellowship as well boosts the tourism industry of any nation. Such meets generate huge employments prospects and thereby become a major source of revenue for a state. For example, cricket matches between India and Pakistan have played a vital part in developing bilateral relations and boosting revenue by sale of tickets.

Nonetheless, it is true that sports can count as a leisure activity because not everyone has the ability and potential to become professional sports players. People engage in sports for entertainment as well as relaxing their mind and body. Additionally, many sports clubs have emerged due to the fact that several people take to sports as an entertainment during free time. Besides, so many dedicated sports channels on television cater to the entertainment needs of sports enthusiasts.

To conclude, I opine that sport can be a powerful tool to nation building by cutting barriers across borders, preventing conflict and building peace as well as raising a nation’s economy, nonetheless, they are also significant as a leisure activity promoting the players’ physical and emotional health and providing the much needed entertainment.
