IELTS Writing Task 2

Essay Answer:

Varying opinions are held by people regarding historical structures, with few contending that they ought to be pulled down and yet some believing that they deserve upkeep.

Advocates of the belief that buildings of historical importance should be destroyed argue that a lot of money is needed to maintain them and there is no use of preserving since many are in a dilapidated condition. They feel resources should rather be devoted to nation building projects like roads, transport system, and so on, which are more beneficial to the populace than a handful of monuments handed down from the past.

Nevertheless, buildings constructed in the days bygone are a significant part of our culture and nation, that depict our rich past, struggles, glories and accomplishments of our ancestors. When citizens or tourists visit them, one can appreciate the contributions of the people of that era and learn many facts. For instance, the India Gate in New Delhi is a war memorial of all the valiant warriors who sacrificed their life for our country. Seeing this, people would value their freedom and hardships braved by our countrymen.

Furthermore, the preservation and maintenance of structures of history, will bring in income for governments from local as well as foreign visitors. There are thousands of tourists who throng to see the glorious and magnificent Taj Mahal in India, one of the seven wonders of the world. Similarly, there are a myriad other tourists destinations which not only bring revenues to authorities but also provide income to native businesses and tradespeople.

To conclude, according to me, preserving and restoring buildings of historical significance is critical, since it reminds us of the rich history of a nation, apart from earning revenues to governments, although some say they must be knocked down.
