Essay Topic: Many people believe that international tourism is a bad thing for their countries. What are the reasons for this? What can be done to change this negative attitude towards international tourism?
The Essay: Many individuals opine that foreign tourism brings negative effects to their countries. According to me, it is primarily because of ignorance of its merits and the harm done to the environment by visiting foreigners, which could however be reversed, with strategic steps by a government.
Firstly, international tourists are often criticized for their contribution to the environment degradation. The waste disposal of water cans, paper and so on by foreign tourists, are the main factors that leads to water, air & soil contamination. Secondly, few natives feel that foreign tourism has a harmful influence on the traditions and customs of host countries since many tourists are careless and insensitive about their emotions and feelings. For instance, in India, there are plenty of religious temples where people from other countries wear inappropriate clothes which attributes to the negative attitude and irritates the local populace.
Nonetheless, the negative impact of global tourists can be reduced governments running awareness campaigns to explain the benefits of international tourism, as it contributes to the development of local people. Moreover, this would not only create job opportunities but also boost the local economy. Additionally, foreign travellers must be provided information about the traditions and culture of their destinations through different media, such as roadside billboards and advertisements.
To conclude, I opine that the inhospitable feelings that some people have for international tourism is due to the pollution caused and a disregard of local customs. Nevertheless, a government can change this negative attitude by highlighting the advantages of foreign visitors to their countrymen and sensitize tourists of the native way of living.
