The Essay Question:
In some countries more and more people are becoming interested in finding out about the history of the house or building they live in. What are the reasons and how can people research this ?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. Write at least 250 words.
The Essay:
In many places globally, more and more people are keen to have past facts of their dwelling. I believe this is because house owners do not want to contend with land grabbers and have safe ownership rights and this is possible with advanced technology.
To begin with, knowledge of the past of a house ensures that the property is legal and is not a disputed one. This would bring the residents an absolute ownership rights, peace of mind and a sense of pride. Many a times, it is seen that a given building is razed to the ground by the government, when the ownership is dubious or controversial. Furthermore, a large part of the populace is superstitious and wish to make sure there is no ill omen associated with their abode. This way they would not have sleepless nights over some perceived threat or ghosts, as it is often believed. For example, in India, the owners of a house, perform a systematic worship of various gods, to nullify any evil spirits that may have made it their home.
However, gaining knowledge about the history of one’s place of residence, albeit a tedious task, can be done over various search engines on the internet. Although, all information on the internet is not trustworthy since anyone can post anything for their personal interest. In addition to this, field enquiry and the official land records of the said property, may give an insight into the history.
In conclusion, according to me, people across several countries, seem to be interested in tracking down the history of their house for their personal security and legal ownership. Besides, in this age of technology, such information can be obtained online or with the concerned authorities.
