Some people claim that not enough waste from homes is recycled. They say that the only way to increase recycling is for governments to make it a legal requirement. To what extent do you think that laws are needed to make people recycle more of their waste ?
The Essay:
According to few people not sufficient residential garbage is processed for using it in other ways and the single path to maximise the same is via suitable laws. I completely agree with this view since in general people do something only when enforced by law.
Firstly, in times to come, the resources will be fast depleting, due to which increasing the amount of domestic litter recycling must be taken up at the national level with governments making appropriate laws. Although, some recycling is done, it is insufficient considering the surge of waste produced. Without laws this would be impossible. For instance, in a recent article published in the leading daily ‘Mirror of Times’, it was reported that many aquatic creatures are dying by consuming plastic refuse thrown into water bodies.
Secondly, punishment and fines by law alone will spur citizens to reprocess their garbage. It is common knowledge that traffic and road safety is maintained by traffic rules. In similar vein, litter laws are indispensable to limit waste and promote its reconversion for use. Leaving the onus of limiting and reusing waste to the populace will not have the required action and garbage will keep rising. Besides, the significance of laws can be evidenced by the fact that malaria as a disease in India was eradicated only when the government made it mandatory for every child to be inoculated.
To conclude, I totally concur that reutilising waste cannot be escalated in the absence of governmental policy and laws, since people commonly follow a norm only when forced by law. Though some recycling is done, owing to its criticality and impact on the environment, stringent rules ought to be enacted to speed up waste recycling, that is presently not enough.
