The given table illustrates the proportion of different types of Australian families living in penury in 1999. Families with sole parents were the maximum poverty-stricken, while households with aged couples were far better off economically amongst all categories.

It can be seen that in Australia in 1999, 11% of all households(1,837,000) lived in poverty. However, 21% of sole parents (232,000) were destitute which was the highest when we consider all family types dwelling in poverty, this is 10% greater than the average Australian figures. This is followed by 19% of single families without children (359,000). Besides, 12% of couples with children( 933,000) lived in poverty, this was double the proportion of single aged poor 6% (54,000). Finally, only 4% of  aged couples(48,000) were found to have lived in privation.

To conclude, aged couples were the least poor and good financially, while the largest proportion of poor were in households with sole parents and single with no children.
