The Essay Topic: Universities should accept equal number of male and female students in every subjects. To what extent do you agree or disagree ?

The Essay: It has been argued that institutes of tertiary education must enroll equal number of students of both sexes in each stream of study. I disagree with this viewpoint since it would be beneficial neither to the universities nor students.

Firstly, universities should have the freedom to select and admit the brightest lot, be they boys or girls. Forcing higher educational institutions to enroll equal quantities of male and female pupils would be detrimental to the quality of results and education. For example, even though the Indian Instite of Technology in Delhi has only few girls in Mechanical engineering, all the students get placed immediately since they are the creme de la creme.

Secondly, if male or female students do not obtain admission in a stream of their choice, they would not be motivated to work and excel or explore their potential. Besides, pupils would shine and contribute positively only when they study subjects that they have a passion for. The performance standards would dip not only for the taught but also for the teachers in universities when disinterested candidates of both sexes fill a class.

On the contrary, proponents of the opposite view, claim that having the same number of males and females in a subject would lead to their overall growth and development. Girls and boys would generate a healthy discussion and sharing of knowledge. In addition, they argue that the minority sex in a class would not be able to express their thoughts freely in a classroom, leading to loss of interest and knowledge. This would hamper their output in the class as well as work place later.

To conclude, I believe that if an educational institution of tertiary learning must accept the same strength of males and females, it would curtail the freedom of universities apart from not bringing out the best in students and institutions, although few contend that it would enable the holistic growth of students.
