The Essay Topic: Some think that private companies should pay for pollution clean up, while others say it should be a government’s responsibility. Discuss, and state your own opinion.
The Essay: It has often been debated as to who should bear the onus of clearing the existing pollution. While few believe the charges ought to be borne by private organisations, yet some think it should be the job of a government.
Firstly, the private sector, has a moral obligation to clear up the rubbish and other pollutants in its surroundings. The corporates draw resources from their neighbourhood and thus should pay back to the community. They should be responsible towards society and ensure cleanliness and cannot be nonchalant about the existing pollution. Secondly, the private sector often use the government funded amenities like roads, water, electricity at nominal costs and hence must contribute to the nation by cleaning the rubbish, litter as well as air pollution. For example, my company every now and then, spends money to organise a cleanliness drive by clearing the pollution that has made the surroundings cleaner and environment healthier.
Nevertheless, a government needs to invest and lay the foundation for an anti pollution drive which the private sector can take up and follow. Pollution clean up is a gigantic task which governments can undertake effectively vis-a-vis the private sector. The huge finance required can be borne only by governments and not individual private companies. The large machinery and equipment needed to stop or clean up pollution, could be installed by governments and the companies could implement the practice. In addition, governments should formulate stringent laws to make sure that the private organisations and citizens adhere to the pollution norms. Besides, recycling of industrial waste ought to be legally mandatory for all companies which would keep the environment pollution free.
To conclude, according to me, cleaning up of pollution is a major responsibility and cannot be done by a government alone. Both the government and private companies must work hand in hand to accomplish the task. While governments could formulate suitable laws and invest in the basic infrastructure needed for it, the private sector must implement the laws and recycle waste as well as keep their surroundings free of pollution.
