The Essay Question: some people think that studying history is a a waste of time while others it is essential to learn. Discuss both views and provide relevant examples.
The Essay Answer:
People have different opinions about the importance of learning history, some of them feel acquiring knowledge regarding ancient times is a vain attempt, whilst others think it is absolutely necessary to know of past events that occurred in the world.
Proponents of the belief that learning history is a sheer squandering of time, contend that it requires students to memories names, dates and facts that have little use in our every day life. Rather than spending valuable time in acquiring historical knowledge, it makes more sense to focus on obtaining relevant skills in the present day context.
On the contrary, education about history gives insight into the wealth and richness of ones nation, culture and traditions to learners. A lot of the erstwhile traditions of countries is now gradually fading away due to lack of information of the past, which can be revived with such awareness. Besides, it creates a sense of belonging that aids in fostering a feeling of patriotism and unity amongst citizens.
In addition, when people study history, they recall a plethora of unfortunate events which has left an indelible mark on the psychology of innocent populace. Moreover, they are reminded not to repeat such acts of violence and atrocities such as the World Wars and nuclear bombing, which harm mankind and our planet.
To conclude, I believe that although in this modern age, studying history appears to be redundant and a waste of time, nonetheless, it reveals a colossal amount of information of cultures and traditions of various nations, which is imperative for people to be aware of. Apart from this, people learn what to avoid and ensure that mistakes of the past are not repeated.
