The Essay:
Spending on railways must be higher on railways as opposed to roads by governments. I completely disagree with this statement since roads connect each and every part of a nation where development of railways lines are not feasible.
To commence with, roads are the lifeline of a country. They are critical for transportation of goods and essential services to distant locations, where railways cannot be installed. The people in such remote places are dependent on roads for procuring their basic amenities for survival. Moreover, the entire crop and produce in tons, such as apples from Kashmir and peaches from Kullu in India, can only be obtained in other parts of the country by roads
Additionally, roads are cheaper for travelling to multiple destinations. The common man need not pay to the railways, but could just use their personal means of transport or even horse or bullock carts, to reach just about anywhere, as in the olden days. For instance, in India, northeast corner states like Arunachal Pradesh or Assam and high altitude regions like Leh Ladhak and so many others, can readily be accessed by the populace on roads where railways are absent.
Nevertheless, some people believe that railways are faster and can carry many people to and from various places at one time, reducing congestion and pollution on roads. Besides, they are required for transportation of bulk and heavy goods such as cars, coal or food items across the nation, which would be quite challenging on roads.
To conclude, according to me, governments ought to invest a greater portion of the finances on road vis-a-vis railways due to the inherent benefits of the former in terms of connectivity and cost.
