The Essay:

There are opposing views on the impact of advertisements. While few opine that it does good to the economy, others are of the thought that it has detrimental societal effects, since it leads to dissatisfaction amongst people with respect to their possessions as well as their individuality.

Advocates of the belief that advertisements result in benefits to an economy, contend that it leads to higher sales and hence profits, for corporates and the government. They argue that it boosts production at all levels, thereby creating employment and business opportunities.

Nevertheless, advertisements give a false promise of well-being and happiness, when one owns the numerous consumer durables and nondurables promoted. The promotions on various media platforms, such as the advertising of Reebock shoes, latest gadgets or cars, seem to assure joy on having them. Thus there is a feeling of lack and poor self-esteem in society and people strive to buy more and more. People are not content with the status quo or their own personality and think that buying the goods advertised will brings completeness, which is certainly a myth

In addition, a gap in society is the consequence of advertising to an extent. The ones who can afford and purchase the products or services promoted on a variety of media, feel superior and look down on those who do not have the same, giving rise to a divide in society. Society is then split into different economic strata that often creates animosity and even violence. Besides, those that cannot obtain the products advertised, could even be depressed.

To conclude, according to me advertisements cause harmful effects on society, evidenced by growing consumerism and depression, notwithstanding the few positive economic results of promoting employment and business.
