The Essay Question:

Some people believe that children should be brought up in cities. Others believe that countryside offers a better environment for children. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

The Essay 1:

There are conflicting opinions regarding whether the urban or rural areas are an ideal place for raising children. While few favour cities others vouch for places far away from them.

Proponents of the view that young ones must be brought up in cities argue that they offer state of the art amenities and a plethora of experiences for children to be future ready. They contend that the exposure of children growing up in cities, makes them smarter and prepares them to face any challenge.

Nevertheless, unlike their village counterparts, children who grow up in cities are generally disconnected from realities and fail to have a holistic approach to life. Besides, children of the up-country are more connected to people and environment and sensitive to the flora and fauna. For example, Amartya Sen, the Indian economist was raised in a small village Shantiniketan and despite graduating from Cambridge, won the Nobel Prize in 1998 for his contributions to welfare economics and social choice theory.

Furthermore, city bred young ones often become materialistic and ambitious vis-a-vis those in the backcountry. As against the children in the countryside, city dwelling children are trained to be competitive and believe that scoring, achieving and winning is paramount. Hence such children are generally more stressed, whereas village children are often happy-go-lucky. According to a report published in the Indian Journal of Psychiatry, the number of depression cases are higher amongst children in urban areas.

To conclude, according to me, the countryside is a much superior location for children to be brought up compared to the cities, since they would naturally be more aligned with reality, the common people and environment, apart from having a more carefree childhood.
