The Essay

Working for oneself, as opposed to working for an organisation or company, is opted for by several people in present days. This could be owing to the desire to make one’s own decisions or to earn much more. Nevertheless, this practice certainly is associated with drawbacks of greater responsibility and financial challenges.

First, many people presently, dislike implementing directives and orders of the management of a firm. They feel it stifling and akin to clipping wings. For instance, many founders of companies, such as Mr. Kishore Biyani of Big Bazaar retail chain, walk into the office at their own time, without restrictions, unlike the work force. Second, the possibility of making larger amount of money, in place of a fixed monthly pay, is attractive to some people, which pushes them to work for themselves. It is well known that business persons are generally more well off, vis-a-vis employed people.

However, being self employed brings more responsibility, since one is answerable to customers at all times. Despite a large workforce, the ultimate onus of the profitability lies squarely on the founders’ shoulders. This multiplies their stress, chipping into personal family time. Furthermore, the risk of financial losses are accompanied with being an independent business owner. Any sudden economic changes can bring loss of business which has to be dealt alone. To exemplify, the recent pandemic shook up a plethora of businesses, forcing many to shut down, due to extended lockdown across countries.

To conclude, according to me, the ongoing tendency of many to work for themselves and not for any organisation, is largely due to the desire to be independent in more ways than one and to multiply earnings. Nonetheless, this brings higher accountability, coupled with danger of losses.
