The Essay Topic: Many people believe that the increasing number of cars in cities is the biggest source of pollution and waste. Others think that industries are the ones causing pollution.

Discuss both views and give your opinion.

The Essay: Few opine that the major cause of pollution and garbage is the rising number of cars in urban areas whilst others attribute it to industries. Both are certainly causing pollution in the environment.

To begin with, increasing cars in cities with its higher demand, directly results in air pollution. Consumption of fuel in cars emit various gases such as sulphur oxide, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide, which are hazardous for our environment. Additionally, these gases trap the heat in the atmosphere, leading to an increase in temperature of the earth and global warming. Besides, one can clearly feel the breath of fresh air in the countryside where the cars are fewer.

On the other hand, industrial pollution is rampant and the primary cause of pollution worldwide. Discharge of industrial gases and wastes into water bodies causes air and water pollution.  For example, the water of many rivers in India like the Yamuna, are rendered unsafe owing to the refuse of industries. Furthermore, many sea creatures are endangered because of water pollution. In addition, water thus contaminated with harmful toxins, effects human life too as water is the basic need to survive on earth. Such polluted water is the main reason of cholera and typhoid which causes millions of deaths every year, which was not the case half a century ago.

To conclude, though there is a dichotomy of opinion on what causes maximum pollution and rubbish, increasing cars or industries, according to me, industrial pollution is the main culprit vis-a-vis multiplying car numbers, as it effects both air and water. Nevertheless, cars too contribute significantly to the menace.
