The Essay:

It is true that citizens in some nations are legally permitted to retain a gun at their residence. This certainly has merits and demerits.

Firstly, possession of a gun at one’s house provides safety to the owner. In some countries crime rate is high and hence it is indispensable to have a gun for self protection. According to the Federal Bureau of Intelligence, there are 3000 break-in burglaries in America per day. Thus having a gun inside the house can help frighten the intruders away and safeguard oneself.

Secondly, ownership of a gun at one’s dwelling, depicts power and authority. Some feel powerful when they have a gun, although this could merely be a false sense of strength. Besides, few even display such arms at home to illustrate their superiority and impress others.

On the contrary, holding a gun at one’s residence, could prove self destructive if used in anger or impulse. Reports show that far greater number of people died in America due to suicide using a firearm than being shot at by others. Moreover, gun shooting and violence by random persons in public places has already cost several lives in few countries across the world, where people can own a firearm legally.

To conclude, I believe that the benefits of owning a gun at home which is permitted in few countries, is far greater than the drawbacks. People not only feel secured but also experience a sense of pride, although there is a risk of being used in anger fatally against oneself or society.
