Essay Question: In a number of countries, some people think it is necessary to spend large sums of money constructing new railway lines for very fast trains between cities. Others believe the money should be spent on improving existing public transport. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

The Essay:

Whether money ought to be spent on connecting cities by way of building railway paths for super fast trains or in the upkeep of prevailing modes of transport, has been a debated point, with people holding opposing views.

To commence with, tracks must be laid out to facilitate high-speed trains that link cities, as this would benefit the economy with reduced travel time for government officials, businessmen and workers, thus increasing productivity. People would reach their destination comfortably and be more productive and can work longer. Besides, more jobs would be generated for the masses with such new technology and hence uplift the economy. For instance, the new bullet train constructed between the commercial centres Mumbai and Ahmedabad in India, has not only led to more jobs but also spurred business in these urban areas.

On the contrary, the means of transport that are plying currently, cannot be ignored either. Making them superior will be advantageous to the populace, since a majority of the population ride them and not everyone can afford the quicker but expensive railways. For example, the metro railway in Delhi is more costly vis-a-vis buses and hence despite the comfort of the metro, a huge section of society, prefer the ubiquitous bus. Moreover, business increases for companies that offer maintenance and upkeep services to the various transport modes, such as the autos, rickshaw, buses and so on. The common man will benefit and the economy as a whole would be uplifted.

To conclude, I believe that investment should be made in creating new express railway lines as well as improving the transport modes that are presently being operated. Both are critical to a nation as they contribute to the economy and citizens in more ways than one.
