Essay Topic: In most of the education systems, students are assessed by written examinations. Do you think it is a good idea or not? Give your reasons
Essay:
It cannot be gainsaid that assessment is vital for students. However, it is moot point whether written examinations are a good concept in a majority of educational institutions.
Firstly, written examination plays a significant role in judging the progress of students during the duration of the course vis-a-vis other form of analyzing their understanding. It gives a bright insight into the learnings of students to their teachers who can thereafter guide them to address their weak points. Thus this serves as a litmus test in an educational set-up. Secondly, such examinations help students to cope up with the stress of final as well as other bigger examinations in life. Moreover, it will prepare them to face the year end audit of their academic knowledge. Therefore, it can be seen that while students feel nervous before the preliminary examinations, in the final written exams they perform quite well having already undertaken several such assessments.
Nonetheless, written examinations can be substituted with course work and projects to evaluate students. Some people believe that analyzing students at regular intervals in this manner, reduces their pressure of written examinations. Moreover, attentiveness of pupils can be evaluated with assignments, projects and practical tasks. Besides, they could be helpful to sharpen communication, analytical, presentation skills and many more abilities.
To conclude, I opine that written examination is an excellent notion in order to judge the progress of students, however, from time to time, evaluation with assignments and projects would also aid students.
