IELTS/ PTE/TOEFL Writing Tasks, The Essay
The Essay Question: Without capital punishment (death penalty)our lives are less secure and crimes of violence increases . Capital punishment is essential to control violence in society.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion ?
Answer:
In the absence of death penalty, living beings are not safe and the amount of criminal acts go up, hence it is required to implement capital punishment to stop crime. I partially agree with this statement, since in many cases, the death penalty is certainly needed to provide justice, limit violence as well as protect people.
Firstly, the death penalty is essential to create fear in the mind of criminals, which would deter them in future, rein in violence and safeguard citizens. Several acts of felony and other atrocities, such as murder or rape, can only be curbed when the doer feels threatened by death penalty and nothing lesser.
Secondly, penalising with a death penalty for serious crimes, is justice rendered to the victim and their families, that makes them feel safer and satisfied. For instance, the masses demanded capital punishment for the recent infamous killers of the innocent girl in New Delhi, Nirbhaya, and it was given.
On the other hand, it is often observed that innocent citizens are sentenced wrongly as culprits. Capital punishment to such culprits would be a grave sin, when the actual culprit could be roaming at large, which would be life threatening for society. Furthermore, at times an accused may be committing an acute crime for the first time out of helplessness to save himself, and hence ought to be given another chance.
In conclusion, I agree to some extent that capital punishment is essential to limit crimes and make people’s life safer. While it is indespensible to give death penalty to serial commiters of heinous crimes, first time offenders should not be judged harshly, besides, thorough research ought to be done to catch the right culprit.
