Essay Question: In some countries, citizens are allowed to keep a gun in their home. Do the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
The Essay :
It is certainly true that some countries allow people to retain guns in their residence in order to protect themselves from criminals. According to me, possessing guns certainly has advantages although associated with pitfalls.
Firstly, keeping a gun at home aids in self defence for citizens, since crime rate in some nations is at its peak. It is required to maintain the law and order in any country. For instance, in America, most individuals legally possess a gun which helps them not only to feel safe but also to protect themselves.
Secondly, some liberal nations claim that every person has a right and the duty to protect themselves and their own belongings. Keeping a gun at home, therefore allows them to safeguard their house and family preventing serious crimes. For instance, my neighbor could ward off a likely robbery in his house, just by shooting in the air, last month.
Nonetheless, some people think that owning a firearm is dangerous , because it may harm other people. Besides, it could be misused by their owner, instead of protecting themselves. Moreover, gunshot wounds and subsequent death rate is significantly higher in those countries where citizens are allowed to keep guns freely. It is observed that the possessions of guns often drive people to commit crimes that were otherwise impossible.
To conclude, it is a fact that few countries legally permit their citizens to have a gun at home. According to me, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages of owning a gun at home, since they are good for self-defense and safety purposes, although their misuse causes irreversible damages.
