The Essay:
Whether History or Science and Technology, is a more significant field of study in school curriculum, is a debated matter, with people contending for either of the subjects. In my view, Science and Technology are paramount for learners at school.
In this age of technology, no one can do without effective utilisation of Science and Technology, not even Historians. Every facet of life of the learners and people in general, is beset with technology. Even study of History and all other subjects, is better done by using smart classes supported by technology and audiovisual presentations.
Furthermore, command over Science and Technology can enable students to outshine others. A student who can skilfully use this subject to their advantage, vis-a-vis one who cannot, can learn faster, get a bigger picture of the topic and hence be more confident, which is a key to success. Besides, the future lies in new inventions which are closely linked to Science and Technology. The innovations in every other sector, be it healthcare, automobiles and so on, can be facilitated by this subject alone.
However, few think that History is of greater importance since it gives children valuable lessons. Additionally, they argue that History gives young learners a glimpse into the past, by which they would value what comes on a platter to them. For example, the freedoms which Indian students enjoy today was attained only after years of struggle and sacrifice made by great leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Bhagat Singh and uncountable others, about whom children must be aware.
To conclude, according to me, Science and Technology and not History, is of higher importance in school academics, since the former is an integral part of existence today and is the the sine qua non of all progress.
