The Essay Question:
Film stars and celebrities often share their views on public matters that have little to do with their profession. Is this a positive or negative development ?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. Write at least 250 words.
The Essay:
It is seen that opinion on issues pertaining to public matters not connected with their own domain, is many a times provided by celebrities and film stars. According to me, this is both a good as well as bad development.
The practice of presenting their ideas by well known personalities, on a variety of topics unconnected with their own work area, is detrimental to society since the common man generally takes that as the final verdict, and tries to emulate them, even if it is economically unaffordable. For instance, the Indian cricketing hero Virender Sehwag, promotes Boost energy drink,which unnecessarily pushes children to buy that even as there are numerous cheaper options.
Nevertheless, it is advantageous since being greatly regarded by people, their thoughts can propel massses towards a greater cause or something genuinely beneficial for a themselves and the nation. To exemplify, the well known Hindi movie actor Sony Sood, promoted consumption of vitamins and do yoga during the recent pandemic, which was certainly taken seriously by masses.
Additionally, these celebrities are instrumental in the growth of sales of many companies selling to the public, indirectly creating more business and employment. Their public opinion on multiple media and social platforms, motivate people to do likewise or use similar products and brands. These icons are trendsetters with many followers and encourage people to buy such brands.
To conclude, I believe that the act of cinema stars and other celebrities sharing their views often on subjects unconnected with their profession, is both positive and negative. Their words urge people to follow their advice, that is beneficial to the corporates and society, although it puts undue pressure on few others.
