The Essay Question:

An increasing number of people are taking to online education these days.  Some people say that this is not as effective as real time classes for learners.

To what extent do you agree or disagree ?

The Essay:

With the advancement in technology, the volume of people studying on the internet is rising. Nevertheless, few opine that this is not as effective as learning with teachers in a brick and mortar classroom. I totally disagree with this view since the process of education is not hindered in any manner.

First, a class with chalkboard or whiteboard and students sitting together, often has challenges of discipline and decorum for teachers, with the necessity of silencing students who often tend to talk amongst themselves. More so with a large strength of students. This is absent in a virtual class where students can focus better since they study owing to their own interest.

Second, e-learners can acquire knowledge at their own time and pace. There is no requirement of commuting and rushing to school or college as they can sit in the comfort of their home and take lessons. Moreover, they may even go back and listen to some recorded classes if they fail to grasp the subject initially. The popularity of these features has led to a jump in online classes and Byju’s Classes, an internet based Indian startup, reported a 60% surge in subscribers in the last six months.

However, some contend that real time teaching is advantageous since students learn better under the physical guidance of a teacher who customises the pedagogy to suit learner needs. Besides, they say, a good relationship with teachers kindles interest in a subject motivating pupils to perform their best.

In conclusion, although few believe that digital education is lesser in effectiveness vis-a-vis traditional classroom teaching, I disagree completely as this new phenomenon of acquiring knowledge online proffers several benefits and is a quantum leap forward in education that is being embraced by more and more students.
