The Essay Question:
Some people believe that women should be treated as equal to men when applying for a job with the police or military while others think that others are less suitable for this job. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
There are divergent views regarding the suitability of female workers in sectors like the police or military forces. Few opine they are fit and yet others contend they are not. Certainly there are varying abilities in both genders.
Advocates of the opinion that women ought to be treated at par with men when seeking jobs in the police or military domains, feel that gender discrimination is unfair and they must prove themselves rather than being outrightly rejected. Besides, they argue that as women have proved themselves equal to men across all fields, they must be provided a fair opportunity.
On the contrary, women are different vis-a-vis men in several aspects. The police or military forces do not require a high amount of patience and sensitivity to the needs of others, whereas imperative in healthcare, teaching, child rearing and so on. Additionally, women have proved successful in these jobs and providing yeoman service to society. For example, most nursing staff are women who do a great job in caring for patients.
Furthermore, women and men being different in bodily powers must not be treated on similar lines for job in the military or police forces, where physical conditions are rather tough and rough. Women are less strong physically and hence not fit for the above jobs that need lot of strength of the body.
To conclude, it is an irrefutable fact that women and men are different both in body and mind and hence I believe they ought not to be treated the same whilst applying for a job in the police or military positions. Such roles are more demanding in combating prowess which women lack and so unfit for above services.
