Writing Task 2, Essay
The Essay Question:
Some people think that it is fine for professional sportsmen and sportswomen to misbehave on or off the field, as long as they are playing well.
Do you agree or disagree with this statement?
The Essay:
It is thought by few that until sports personalities perform well, it is acceptable that they conduct themselves rudely, just about everywhere. I completely disagree with this since impolite behaviour is detrimental not only to themselves but also for their team and country.
Proponents of the notion that ill mannered acts of sports performers is fine and should not be made an issue of, while they play well, argue that after all they win laurels for their themselves and the nation and hence, it does not matter. Additionally, they practice so rigorously with discipline that bad behaviour is but an outlet of their stress.
Nevertheless, bad mannerism can tarnish the image and output of a player. Besides, it is scientifically proven that peak performance is possible only with mental balance. For instance, in a recent tennis match, the tennis star Serena Williams lost her cool and reacted angrily towards the umpire, after which she was fined and lost the match.
Moreover, sports persons are often role models for thousands of fans and their discourteous actions will be a bad influence for them. More importantly, these players ought to set an example with their exemplary etiquette, so that their ardent admirers can follow in their footsteps. Else, a country with irate players will be unwelcome in other countries during international sporting events.
In conclusion, I disagree with the viewpoint of some that it is fine for sports men and women to behave in a manner unacceptable socially any where, so long as they play well. Such top players must act with caution since it will hamper the game result. Moreover, they are looked up to by many and therefore must be composed on or off the field.
