IELTS Writing Task 2
The Essay Question: The only way to solve the increasing crime rate of young offenders is to teach parents better parenting skills.
To what extent do you agree?
The Essay: It is believed that educating parents on improving nurturing abilities, is the sole means to resolve the escalating offenses by children. I completely agree with this approach as parents are the biggest influencers of a child’s personality and approach towards life.
Firstly, parents ought to be educated to portray ideal behaviour since children learn from what they see. Majority of the children who end up on the wrong side of law, are those who come from broken families and poor backgrounds. Moreover, they grow up seeing violence and abuse in their own households that eventually defines normalcy for them. For instance, Charles Shobraj, the infamous serial killer, was a child born out of wedlock and neglected by his parents.
Secondly, spending time with children and observing their day to day activities, are of utmost importance. Apart from this, getting to know their friends is critical, as this would prevent them from joining bad peer group or being bullied. Research on juvenile crime, reports that most teenagers who are part of violent gangs are forced to do something unlawful even if they do not want to, because they want to be accepted by the group.
Finally, it is of foremost importance for parents to keep an eye on a child’s conduct at all times, as many incidents of crime evolve from being subject to harassment. Making them realize that they are well protected and loved, would be the only way they would share their problems.
To conclude, according to me, it is totally correct that parents should be taught better ways to raise a child, as they play a vital role in their growth and character that would avoid crimes by children.
