The Essay :
While several governments are of the opinion that their primary aim is economic development, few people believe that other parameters of progress are as much crucial.
According to the world bank, economic progress is a measure of the gross domestic product, poverty rates, infrastructure, healthcare, education and more. All this is required for the masses and a country cannot depend for the basics on other countries. Thus any government certainly aims at economic progress since it is required for the betterment of its people.
Nonetheless, a positive outlook of the people is vital. Despite providing the basic infrastructure, educational and healthcare facilities, if the people are not motivated to lead a healthy lifestyle, such schemes would be of little use. What is undesirable is great healthcare facilities with an increasingly unhealthy population. The practice of consuming a healthy diet, lifestyle, yoga and meditation are paramount for a positive mindset that fosters holistic health, communal harmony, trust and security amongst people.
Besides, economic inequality is a factor that needs to be delved into with concern, which is often seen in many economically developed nations. This leads to an increase in unrest and crime in society. Finland, the happiest country in 2023, despite showing lower gross domestic product, exhibits more social equality, cultural values and strong social welfare systems.
To conclude, many governments target economic progress primarily since providing the basic needs are a must. Nevertheless, progress in social equality, positive attitude and happiness of citizens, are factors that must be focused on as well.
