The Essay Question:
In recent years, many small local shops have closed because customers travel to large shopping centers or malls to do their shopping. Is this a positive or a negative development?
In this modern era, it has been observed that consumers prefer to visit big supermarkets or shopping malls for all their needs which is impacting smaller native shops, ultimately leading to their closure. In my opinion, this is a favourable shift in trend, considering the advantages offered by huge shopping complexes.
To begin with, giant shopping malls bring different vendors under one roof and provide a range of services. These malls sell everything, such as groceries, branded clothes, kitchen appliances and electronic gadgets amongst others, which customers need. Furthermore, they act as a perfect picnic spot for many families, since there are food courts and cinema halls in the same building.
In addition, these malls are more secure and provide suitable environment during all weather conditions. All shopping places are usually equipped with air conditioners, which makes them more comfortable to walk around. Additionally, these shopping malls are managed and monitored by security guards, therefore people feel safe while roaming therein.
However, notwithstanding all the plus points of these large shopping centers, the big shopping malls have forced small shops owners to close their business and find an alternate source of income. Many of them do not have the needed capital and are rendered jobless. Besides, the populace have lost the service of free home delivery, credit period and personal connect, they enjoyed with the small retail outlet owner. Expansive malls generally are lacking in such services.
In conclusion, large shopping malls have made shopping convenient and simple by stocking all the items under one roof and eliminating any security risk. Hence, in my opinion, despite the shutting down of several neighbourhood not so big shops, their advent is a positive development.
